Several Resurrections in the Bible
Most Christians are unaware that there are several Resurrections mentioned in the Bible! Because of the traditions of many churches, and the lack of reading their Bible or reading it literally, they generally lump a single Resurrection into the last day and neglect or refuse to accept any other interpretation.
What are the Resurrections in the Bible?
The following link to “Got questions” does a great job in summarizing the various Resurrections in the Bible. Enjoy!
First Fruits – Christ raised from the dead as our first fruits!
Rapture – Church age believers resurrected before the Seven Year Tribulation! 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, and 1 Corinthians 15:50-58
First Resurrection – Jesus Christ 2nd Coming – A great resurrection at the end of the Tribulation period, a resurrection to life Revelation 20:4, 6
Final Resurrection – After the millennial period – unbelievers raised for judgment of those dying in the millennial period. Revelation 20:5. The Post Tribulation believers love to use John 5:28-29 to validate their belief that 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 occurs on the last day instead of the happening before the Seven Year Tribulation.
Post Tribulation beliefs versus Pre-Tribulation beliefs on Rapture
Post tribulations believers, those who believe the church must go through the tribulation use Revelation 20:6 that speaks of a first resurrection to support their view point! This first resurrection or Rapute as they say it must occurs after the tribulation and must be the Rapture spoken of in 1st Thessalonian 4:13-18 and 1st Corinthians 15:50-52. However, they are hard pressed to find any mention of the church age of true believes in the tribulation but insist that those martyred are the church.
Again, they seem to miss the point that John is speaking of a resurrection of souls that did not receive the mark of the beast during the tribulation and are raised to life to go into the millennial period. Take notice that the rest of the dead did not come back to life again is also a resurrection or a final resurrection judgment of unbelievers.
Notice the place where the first resurrection occurs, in Revelation 20:6 after the Tribulation? It occurs in heaven commencing at the throne of God and is not in the clouds where the Raptue occurs with Christ and only believers not unbelievers are present!
The Rapture that occurs before the Seven Year Tribulation has a different audience and occurs in a different place then the first resurrection of Revelation 20:6 and specifically identifies the dead in Christ and those that are living meeting Christ in the clouds! His angles are not gathering the church believers either but Christ solely alone!
Again, first resurrection in Revelation 20:6 is only limited to just the souls who were martyred during the Seven Year Tribulation. The Church age has been exempted from the Wrath of God in the Tribulation.
There is yet to follow a final resurrection after the first resurrection which is after the millennial period to judge the living and the dead! So, in short, the first resurrection is not the last resurrection but is only the first resurrection and a final resurrection will follow if you take the verses in content! Who Wins the Prize for a Single Resurrection?
Without going into much detail here, Covenant theology wins the prize! They teach that the Church is an Expansion of Israel (Covenant Theology) such that Israel is washed up and is an extinct Nation forever abandoned by God! They say there is no need to fulfill Old Testament scripture concerning Israel because those scriptures can’t be taken literally!
Covenant Theology Denies 1000-Year Millennial
They say there is no real physical 1000-year millennial reign of Christ on this earth as those scriptures are not to be taken literally and leave open a big discrepancy or void of Old Testament prophesy not being fulfilled since they interpret it as symbolic. One wonders how they determine what scripture to omit and which ones to accept? Maybe John 3:16 shouldn’t be taken literally?
Covenant theology has its roots in the writing of Augustine. Martin Luther and John Calvin were reformers that did not accept all scripture as literal. Martin Luther did not believe in the book of James and had problems with the book of Revelation. So Calvin had problems with the book of Revelation. Both of the two were Anti-Semitic. Do a look up on the internet if in doubt. Today to name a few are R.C. Sproul, Rick Warren. John Piper embraces Covenant Theology partially but differs from the rest and believes in the 1000 year reign. Some churches that embrace Covenant Theology are: Reformed Baptist, Presbyterians, Catholics, Lutherans to name a few.
Covenant Theology Discredits the Rapture
They like to quote Darby or state that the Rapture is some new theology and invalid because it started recently but can’t see past their noses whereby when using the book of John or Revelation to support their theology, they miss the point that these books were written years after the Book of 1st Thessalonians!
What Books do Covenant Theology use to Discredit the Rapture?
They love to use the book of John and Revelation to discredit the Rapture spoken of in the Books of Thessalonians but fail to mention that the folks Paul was speaking to did not have the book of John or Revelation!
The book of 1st Thessalonians was written around 50 A.D. 2nd around 51 AD and John around 85 to 90 AD and Revelation around 90 and 95 A.D. So, Paul was revealing and teaching the Rapture, the mystery of the church early on before the books of John and Revelation.
In addition, a Covenant Theologian might say that the books of Thessalonians speak nothing of the Tribulation, but I say it speaks of the Wrath of God! God takes His Wrath out during the Seven-Year-Tribulation period! And yes, the Old Testament speaks of a single resurrection, Daniel 12:2 but that does not apply to the church as the church was a mystery at that time!
For Him who has Ears to Hear
For some, you may have ears to hear and can accept several Resurrections, and for others, well you have been brought up in the traditions of the church and are not able to accept that there are more then a single Resurrection in the Bible.
Some might say, what difference does it make if one believes the Rapture or not? My response is when we are living in troubling times and it appears that man does not have all the answers, we can look to the imminent return of Christ in the clouds as purification and to rescue us from His Wrath of the Seven-Year-Tribulation and most of all we are candidates of receiving a Crown of Righteousness!
Crown of Righteousness for those Loving His Appearing!
2 Timothy 4
8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Pass it on for other Christians in the body to enjoy!
